This is a story that Ross' e-mail and Kurt's hand tools presentation brought back to mind. I wore glasses for almost 20 years before getting LASIK in 2002 (Age 9 to not quite 29). One thing my parents insisted on (and I continued with once paying for my own) was getting glasses that were, if not really true safety glasses, at least impact/shatter proof. Most were rated well enough that they passed standards for a few kinds of labor. In short, I learned to use tools while always wearing some level of eye protection.
After my vision correction it really hadn't occurred to me to get eye protection aside from sunglasses until the first time I used a drill post LASIK. Again, up to that point, I had always had something on my face protecting my eyes. Took about 5 seconds for some form of debris to get in one eye and that's when it hit me "oh yeah, eye protection...gotta get some." So I have 3 pairs of safety glasses around the house now, one tinted for sunny, outdoor work and the other two clear (it's good to have a spare).
