I recently took my voluntary Slips, Trips, and Falls online safety course, to comply with the Centennial Safety participation program. In the past few weeks, I have noticed cracks forming in the chair mat, under my desk.
This morning, the crack became something, that while standing could definitely cause a trip and fall. I would imagine attempting to roll a chair across that crack would prove challenging, without resulting in a potential fall.
Investigating replacement chair mats informed me that the root cause of this issue probably stems from the fact that the thickness (carpet and pad) below the mat is close to 1", while the mat itself was designed for use over carpet with a thickness of less than 1/2".
Moral of the story: Be sure to use the proper equipment, in the intended application. We don't see Scott Matthews cutting a Parallam header with a coping saw, do we?
Procurement of a replacement chair mat will include those intended for use over carpet with a thickness of 1".
Who knew there were different floor mats for different types of carpet? Thanks for sharing this tip. I had a similar issue a few years ago and got my shoe heel stuck in a cracked mat...it was like being on a tether line. I'm checking mine at home and work this week to look for cracks.
