Kitchen safety - keep your knives sharp and use oven mitts!

It's common sense, and I know better.

Burned the top of my hand.  I was removing a lasagna from the oven, and only using pot holders.  I should have used the oven mitts, but they were stored in an inconvenient low cupboard (the kids like to play with them), so I just grabbed the more convenient pot holders and singed to top of my hand

THEN I cut my finger while cutting up an onion with a less-than sharp kitchen knife.  I was in a hurry, using too much force, and I'm usually very good about checking for dullness and using my "honing steel".  It was a painful reminder that it's time to sharpen my knives to get that good, sharp edge back.  FYI -"honing" should be done frequently (like brushing teeth), "sharpening" is done less often (like going to the dentist for cleaning).

  1. I'm also really bad at using oven mitts...I have tiny hands so the mitts never felt comfortable to use. Because of that, I can't tell you how many times I've burned my wrists and the top of my hands.

As far as knives, another safety tip is to never stick your knives in the sink when you are done with them. It's easy to forget they are there, especially if the bottom of your sink fills up with cloudy or soapy water. I try and keep my dirty knives just next to the sink and I make sure that they are the first items I wash after cooking.
