While on a campout with the Boy Scout Troop last week, we were cooking foil dinners in a fire pit for dinner. I opted to use freeze-dried meals, which require boiling water, and then adding the hot water to the food. In the process of making a fire pit full of coals to cook the foil dinners, I placed my water kettle to the side. In next to no time, the water was boiling. I used a glove to retrieve the kettle, only to find that the glove was not rated for hot work. As a result, I received a burn to a finger that ending up blistering, etc. I applied plenty of cool water, and then burn ointment and a bandage.
The Boy Scouts have a motto, "Be Prepared". This event reinforced that. Although I knew I would be cooking in a fire, I grabbed gloves that were not truly meant for hot work. I have since acquired a pair of gloves intended for dutch oven cooking for the future.
Just yesterday I used the wrong gloves for the task. I was in the kitchen baking and using my Ove Gloves (designed for hot temps)...but taking breaks to plant veggies in the garden. I must not have had my "mind on the task" because next thing I knew, I was digging in the dirt with my Ove Gloves (not designed for outdoor gardening use!) Guess that's better than using my gardening gloves to pull hot bread out of the oven (ouch!) Thanks for sharing. -- Shannon
