Spring cleaning to prevent fire hazards
I was cleaning this weekend and decided to do a search on how to clean the vents above the stove. I hate to admit I have never cleaned mine before. When looking for a how-to I ran across a story of how not cleaning them WAS a fire hazard for the person posting the information. I tried the instructions below and it did work. The vents were completely clean afterwards. Caution: even with adding the baking soda VERY SLOWLY when I got close to the full 1/2 cup added the was no stopping the water overflow, but with a quick water cleanup my stove is no longer a greasy fire hazard.
“How-To” on cleaning greasy oven vent filters is simple. Haul out your biggest pot, fill it with water and bring it to a boil. Then add 1/2 cup of BAKING SODA….VERY SLOWLY! Literally, you have to add it about a tablespoon at a time because it IMMEDIATELY fizzes up quite alarmingly! (The fizz goes right away.) Then take your caked-with-grease filter and submerge it in the pot.
