I've been witness to two First Aid emergencies within the past two weeks...
The first was at home. My husband managed to have a fight with his fingers and the fan on the car... let's just say the car fan won. I was able to use my first aid kit I have for work that I keep in my car to help bandage him up... We decided not to take him to the ER immediatly but he did go to a walk in clinic the next day and the doctor's told him he should have come in the night before and got stitched up... instead they had to cut the mangled skin off and rebandage him up. This incident made us realize though while it was good that I had the first aid kit we need A LOT BETTER one to keep at home... especially with a little boy on the way.
The second incident happen at work while I was talking to a co-worker. We were discussing my husband fingers coincidentally which turned into a blood, guts, and gore conversation... which made my co-worker wozzy and eventually passout and fell to the ground. Once again, my first aid training kicked into gear and I was able to run through the "Are you ok" do you need me to get more help questions. Turns out he was ok and has done this before... but what a scare it was!
In conclusion, even though I did have my first aid training running through my head I would like to have felt more confident with what to do... I am proposing that maybe we include in our montly safety training a quick overview of one of the topics from the Red Cross First Aid Manual just as a review... maybe one topic a month. My previous safety group in Federal Way did this for quite awhile and I thought it was very good information that didn't take much time to do.
