Campfire Safety in the woods

Recently, one of the Boy Scouts in a local troop performed the activities required for his Eagle project (think senior project).  He chose to work with the Forest Service, to upgrade campgrounds around a lake.  We had eight fire rings to install.  First, we had to remove any existing rock fire rings, and disperse the rocks a sufficient distance to discourage re-gathering.  As we received training at the first site, we emphasized safety, and the proper use of the hand tools we were using to prepare the site and install the fire rings.  We installed three other rings that day, and the remaining four the next morning, with a few blisters as the only First Aid needed.

The Scout did a good job of having a plan in place, and executing to that plan.

The fire rings were installed to define camp sites locations the forest service wanted to establish and maintain, as they continued to improve the area for recreational use.  the fire rings provide a much safer containment environment for fire than a ring of rocks.

Sadly, as we drove out and away from the lake, we passed the first site we had installed a fire ring at, only to see that someone had already stolen the fire ring.

Very frustrating, and kind of defeating...
