This weekend my sons had a toy where the battery in the
controller had died. So I went to the “Junk Drawer” where we keep all our
batteries, and other types of things we might need but never do. I realized
that I was being a kind or hoarder, because there were things in there that I
would never use. So I started cleaning it out, when I came to a little storage
bin. The bin had things from old keys, paper clips, thumb tacks, twist ties,
and batteries that weren’t in the original packing. One of these Batteries was
a 9 volt, and it was hot to the touch. I quickly grabbed it out of the bin and
placed it in the sink. I just thought the battery had gone bad. Wanting to know
why it got hot I did some research on the internet, boy was I surprised what I found.
I was not aware that storing batteries this way could be a potential for a
house fire. After read some from the links below, I placed electrical tape on
the end of the battery and threw it away. I reorganized the drawer and placed
the extra batteries in proper containers. I have including several links about storage
and disposal of batteries below.
I JUST saw a video posted to facebook about this very thing and it did cause a house fire in a family's home. I was going to post the video but it looks like you covered it! Good post!
