So this doesn't align well with our monthly focus topic, but was at the front of my mind and may be applicable to all of us. While timing of this may apply to each of us differently...some brisk mornings here in MN already have got us thinking about our furnace tune-ups to prepare for the impending cooler weather.
Safety
tips for starting up your furnace this fall
As these cooler temps prevail, you
may be tempted to turn on your furnace in the morning to keep the chill at bay.
If so, you may want to check out these safety tips before kicking on the heat:
1. Change out your furnace filter.
Just like the rule of thumb for changing out your smoke alarm batteries is
Daylight Savings Time, make the changing of the seasons your cue to install a
new filter (if you dont do it more regularly anyway).
2. Have your furnace inspected
annually by a professional.
3. If you are lucky enough to have a
fireplace, get the flue and chimney checked out. Sometimes leaves or birds
nests can clog up the passage.
4. Check your pilot light to make
sure it’s in working order.
5. Check your carbon monoxide
detectors. Make sure they are UL-approved, alarm-sounding devices – if not, you
can get them at places like Walmart, Target, and hardware stores.
