Ergo issues are the greatest risk to being hurt at work...at least for most us. Ergo issues are also tricky because they don't happen as a single event - they build up over time.
There is no easy answer for ergo either, we have to work at it every day and keep the risks at mind. For this month, we should refresh our memories on the basics of Ergo:
1) You need to stop from time to time and think about how you are feeling. It is not okay to work through pain at work. These issues never fix themselves. When caught early small modifications can make a huge difference. Please fill out a physical discomfort form if you haven't done one in a while:
Discomfort Form
2) Last year we did a great job of looking a desk pictures of our team. Many sets of eyes pick out items that one of us might miss. Not to mention we are mostly remote and don't have the opportunity to see each other's setups. Please post a picture of your desk for the team to discuss on the next call - either on the blog or Sharepoint where we had last year's pictures.
3) A key element of ergo is managing the risk that comes with working on a computer all day. WorkPace is our key tool for reminding us of this risk. It "goes off" when there is higher risk - intensity, speed, consistent duration, etc. It doesn't tell you when you are safe, but it can warn you that there is a potential for injury. It is up to us to be aware of this risk. Please visit the WorkPace phone home site and see what it says about your past risk level. Wellnomics
