Taking Defensive Driving

I've spotted something most safety groups either disagree with or at least have an alternate suggestion in the course material pretty much every time I've taken the course.  This year it was about where to grip the wheel on a car equipped with airbags.   The course recommends the 8 and 4 positions.  However most places have a current standard recommendation to grip at 9 and 3.  One source of information is from this article from March of this year.

Driver's Ed Has Led You Astray

I would not be surprised if others had heard that 9 and 3 are OK.  This isn't really a situation where one is wrong and the other is right; the 8 and 4 grip is fine as is 9 and 3.  The main point is to get people to stop driving at the old standard which was 10 and 2 and very dangerous with airbags.  My car happens to have a wheel where 8 and 4 just is not practical as it would interfere with control of the car.

I could see situations where a holding the wheel at 9 and 3 could be similarly impacted by design.  So now we have two possible safe grip points to choose from.

And just for fun...my first car was old.  Anyone else learn to drive on a car with the old "suicide knob"?

  1. Sure do remember Michael! As many early 70’s and prior vehicles had no “power assisted steering” I believe the “suicide knobs” are now only legal on off-road, farm vehicles, and boats?
