Travel Safety - where to park car?

While vacationing on President's day weekend I found myself at a hotel in a section of town I was unfimilar with.  I eneded up with two choices on where to leave to car overnight.  Option 1 was a well lit spot close to the main road near a gas station option 2 was deep in the hotel lot away from the street where it was dark and further away from the hotel entrance. I chose option 1 because I figured I was more likely to walk back to the hotel entrance safely since it was well lit and closer.
